Why Zengzi Killed the Pig

This is a well-known ancient story about teaching children. Zengzi was a student of Confucius. One day, as Zengzi's wife was leaving to go shopping, her youngest son kept crying because he wanted to go with her. So she comforted him saying, "Just wait at home. After I come back, I will kill a pig and cook the pork for you." At that time, pork was eaten only during the New Year and as a luxury on special occasions, such as a visit from a prestigious person. When the wife came back, she found Zengzi preparing to slaughter a pig. She hurriedly stopped him, saying, "I only said that to comfort him!"
Zengzi told her, "You cannot lie to a child. Since they are young and have no social experience, they follow what their parents tell them. If you lied to him today, you would actually be teaching him to lie to others like that. If a mother lies to her child, the child won't listen to her. Is this a good way to teach children?" Then, Zengzi killed the pig and cooked the pork. The story tells us that parents should not lie to children at any time, because, as children's most direct examples, the parents’ behavior will significantly influence their children. A child will follow what the parents do. Zengzi fully understood that children can be well educated only after their parents behave well.

вообще, я считаю, нужен учебник истории, в котором бы можно было бы посмотреть, что происходило в тот или иной отрезок времени в том или ином месте глобуса. а то лично у меня все в голове существует параллельно и совершенно не пересекается - отдельно Древняя Греция, отдельно отечественная история, отдельно вот теперь Китай, про который, кстати, в моих школьных учебниках было три строчки про шелк, бумагу и порох. а, еще про Хуанхэ и восстание желтых повязок.

Male Colors: The Construction of Homosexuality in Tokugawa Japan

Tokugawa Japan ranks with ancient Athens as a society that not only tolerated, but celebrated, male homosexual behavior. Few scholars have seriously studied the subject, and until now none have satisfactorily explained the origins of the tradition or elucidated how its conventions reflected class structure and gender roles. Gary P. Leupp fills the gap with a dynamic examination of the origins and nature of the tradition. Based on a wealth of literary and historical documentation, this study places Tokugawa homosexuality in a global context, exploring its implications for contemporary debates on the historical construction of sexual desire. Combing through popular fiction, law codes, religious works, medical treatises, biographical material, and artistic treatments, Leupp traces the origins of pre- Tokugawa homosexual traditions among monks and samurai, then describes the emergence of homosexual practices among commoners in Tokugawa cities. He argues that it was "nurture" rather than "nature" that accounted for such conspicuous male/male sexuality and that bisexuality was more prevalent than homosexuality. Detailed, thorough, and very readable, this study is the first in English or Japanese to address so comprehensively one of the most complex and intriguing aspects of Japanese history.

сегодня на лекции учительница нам доказала, что "чем больше я знаю, тем меньше я знаю".
нарисовала на доске 2 круга - большой и маленький, внутри каждого написала "познанное", а снаружи - "непознанное". и говорит: "чем больше ваш круг, тем больше его окружность, которая есть соприкосновение с непознанным. поэтому чем больше вы знаете, тем больше вы не знаете". ну и Сократа вспомнила ))
очень мне эта наглядность понравилась ))

Borrowing of arrows with straw boats

Prior to the Battle of Red Cliffs, Zhuge visited the Eastern Wu camp to assist Zhou Yu. Zhou was jealous of Zhuge's talent and felt that Zhuge would become a threat to Eastern Wu in future. He assigned Zhuge the task of making 100,000 arrows in ten days or face execution for failure in duties under military law. Zhuge promised that he could complete the mission in three days. With help from Lu Su, Zhuge prepared 20 large boats, each manned by a few soldiers and filled with human-like figures made of straw and hay.
At dawn, when there was a great fog, Zhuge deployed the boats and they sailed towards Cao Cao's camp across the river. He ordered the troops to beat war drums loudly and shout orders to imitate the noise of an attack. Upon hearing the noise, Cao's troops rushed out to engage the enemy, but they were unsure of the enemy's strength, because their vision was obscured by the fog. They fired volleys of arrows towards the sound of the drums and the arrows became stuck in the straw figures. In the meantime, Zhuge was enjoying wine with Lu Su inside the cabin and they returned to the Eastern Wu camp when the fog cleared. Zhuge acquired more than 100,000 arrows with this ingenious strategy and Zhou Yu had no choice but to let him off.
