In a number of places in the novel, Liu Bei and other heroes are said to 'share the same bed' (tong ta). While it has always been common for people in China to sleep in the same bed (most often with each person sleeping head to toe) and doing so does not automatically mean they are having sex, the term tong ta has been used with sexual denotation for centuries. Furthermore, it is often used to indicate a sexual relationship which is highly hierarchical. As early as the Song Dynasty, for example, we have instances where the lord 'orders' a subordinate to 'share the same bed' with him.
