For example, no. 495 in the Kokin wakashu. Perhaps the following poem recorded in the Buddhist work Nihon ryoiki (ca. 820) refers to a sexual relationship; it expresses the sorrow of the Hosso priest Shingon at the death of his beloved disciple Gyogi:
Did you not promise me that we would die together?
But alas, you are gone,
Leaving me behind.
Are you a crow, to be such a great liar?
